How We Teach
Welcome to the Heart of our Approach
At Pear Tree School, we believe in nurturing not just the academic but the whole child.
Our educational approach, rooted in our core belief to 'Inspire Purpose and Empower Legacies,' seamlessly integrates intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and ethical development.
This prepares our students to not only excel in academics but to thrive in life's various challenges.
The Pear Tree Method
The Pear Tree Method is our signature approach to education, distinguished by its holistic and integrated framework. This advanced method emphasizes:
- Academic Rigor through interdisciplinary themes that connect knowledge to real-world issues.
- Physical Wellness with daily physical education and a nutritious hot lunch program, recognizing the critical link between physical health and learning effectiveness.
- Social and Emotional Growth through everyday interactions within our supportive community, fostering resilience and emotional intelligence.
- Ethical Understanding by encouraging students to make positive impacts through informed, thoughtful actions.
Theme-Based Learning
At the heart of The Pear Tree Method lies our innovative theme-based learning approach, which immerses students in rich, real-world themes that intersect multiple subject areas. This approach not only deepens understanding but also enhances students' ability to see connections between different fields of study.
How It Works:
- Interdisciplinary Themes: Each theme weaves together knowledge and skills from different subjects—such as math, science, language arts, and social studies—around a central topic.
For instance, a theme like 'Water' might incorporate activities on the science of water cycles, calculations of household water usage, examinations of water usage in different societies, stories about drought, and artistic representations of water. - Real-World Relevance: We choose and design themes that matter in the real world today, which helps students see the importance of what they're learning. They discover how to apply their knowledge in ways that can make a difference, like understanding environmental issues or solving community problems.
- Learning in Context: By studying subjects within the context of a broader theme, students can make connections naturally. This approach makes it easier for them to grasp complex concepts and retain the information they learn.
- No Textbooks: We do not use traditional textbooks that often limit the scope of learning. Instead, we utilize a rich array of resources including non-fiction books, novels, articles, and digital content that offer a broad scope of reading and accompanying activities relevant to the needs and aptitudes of our students.

Project-Based Learning
At Pear Tree School, project-based learning isn’t just a buzzword—it's a core component of our educational philosophy. Unlike many schools that may offer PBL in name only, our approach is deeply integrated into every aspect of our curriculum and is designed to produce genuine outcomes that go beyond the classroom.
Deep Integration within our Themes:
- Our projects extend from each theme's curriculum content and skills, ensuring that each project is meaningful and integrated. This deep integration helps students apply their learning in context, enhancing their understanding and retention of subject matter and skills.
- Students are not learning passively; they are actively applying their skills in real-world scenarios. This authentic use of knowledge contrasts sharply with the superficial projects often seen elsewhere.
Focused on Real-World Problems:
- Problem-Solving: Each project begins with a real-world problem that is relevant both locally and globally. Students must navigate these problems, propose solutions, and test their ideas in actual scenarios.
- Collaborative Efforts: True to the demands of the real world, students work collaboratively to tackle these problems, which helps them develop critical life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication.
Tangible, Impactful Outcomes:
- Community Interaction: Projects often involve community stakeholders, experts, and local leaders, providing students with the opportunity to present their solutions to real audiences who can provide genuine feedback and, in some cases, implement student-generated ideas.
- Visible Impact: The impact of our PBL initiatives is visible—whether it’s a student-led community garden that teaches sustainability, a digital app that assists local businesses, or a student-organized symposium on social justice. These are not hypothetical exercises; they are real projects with real outcomes.

Academic Excellence
At Pear Tree School, our commitment to academic excellence is foundational. We provide a rigorous, enriched curriculum that not only meets but often exceeds provincial standards, preparing our students comprehensively for global citizenship and future challenges.
Key Elements of Our Academic Excellence:
- Rigorous Coursework: We go beyond the basic expectations of the BC curriculum by introducing advanced topics and projects that encourage students to think critically and solve complex problems. This not only enhances their learning but also gets them ready for the challenges of the future.
- Individualized Support: Every student is unique, so we provide personalized attention to help each child thrive. Whether a student needs extra help with a tough math concept or advanced materials to stay challenged, we’re there to support their growth.
- Global Readiness: Our curriculum includes important topics that help students become well-rounded global citizens, such as international cultures, languages, and global issues. We prepare them to work with people from around the world and to make a positive impact.
- Assessment as Learning: While we recognize the importance of tests, we use them to enhance learning rather than merely to measure it. Our assessments are designed to provide feedback on the learning process, helping students improve and excel over time.
Technology Integration
At Pear Tree School, we use technology thoughtfully and purposefully to enhance educational experiences.
While we value and prioritize traditional skills such as writing with pencil and paper and engaging in hands-on activities, especially for younger students, we also recognize the significant role that technology can play in deepening learning where it adds unique value.
How We Use Technology:
- Creative and Productive Tools: We integrate technology as a tool for creativity, research, and productivity. This includes using iPads and laptops to support and amplify learning in ways that traditional methods cannot. For example, students might use software for art and design, digital storytelling, or to simulate complex scientific processes.
- Balanced Approach: Our approach is balanced; we ensure that technology serves as a complement to traditional learning methods rather than a replacement. This philosophy is particularly important for younger students, where foundational skills like handwriting and manual dexterity are crucial.
- Enhancing Learning: In cases where technology can provide a significant learning advantage, we utilize it to its full potential. This might involve using advanced software for design and simulation, which allows students to experiment and explore concepts in a virtual environment that would be impossible or impractical to replicate physically.
- Purposeful Application: Every use of technology at Pear Tree School is intentional, aimed at enhancing educational outcomes and preparing students for a future where digital literacy is paramount. We provide students with the skills to use technological tools effectively and ethically, ensuring they are capable, confident, and creative users of technology.

ePortfolio & Report Cards
At Pear Tree School, we provide detailed report cards and utilize Seesaw, a student-driven digital portfolio, to offer regular insights into student progress and achievements. This extensive reporting method ensures parents are well-informed and actively involved in their children’s academic journey.
Additionally, we use individualized goalsetting, similar to an Individualized Education Plan IEP. However, we use these for all students, since everyone benefits from goalsetting. Additionally, goalsetting goes beyond academics to social, emotional and physical progress.
